An Interactive 2-Day
Landscape of Learning Math Institute
on Multiplication and Division
|
|
Facilitators: Dr. Cathy Fosnot and Pat Milot |
"Our work is driven by the desire to transform classrooms into communities of mathematicians: places where children explore interesting problems and, like mathematicians, engage in crafting solutions, justifications, and proofs of their own making."

Explore what an active math workshop likes like, develop the Landscape of Learning for Multiplication and Division and the role of Context in supporting Development, Conferring, and scaffolding of children’s mathematical thinking and reasoning.
AGENDA Day 1
- Do a math investigation on cross-cultural and historical multiplication algorithms
- Participate in a “Math congress”
- Developing the scaffolding and strategies related to the idea of proof
- Build the Landscape of Learning for multiplication ( big ideas, strategies, and models)
- View classroom video clips , develop teacher’s ability to actually see the emergence of mathematical thinking in young children
- Participants analyze additional samples of children’s work and apply the Landscape of Learning
- Plan a “Math congress” and in groups justify and support the reasoning
AGENDA Day 2
- Overview of what it means to calculate with number sense
- What does efficient computational strategies look like
- Examine how the strings of related problems were crafted
- Explore representation strategies- open number line, ratio table, and double number line
- Extending the Landscape of Learning to develop division
- Explore more mini-lessons and examine pedagogy, roles of representation, and choice of number in crafting the strings
- Conclude with a cross-walk of how the Contexts for Learning in Mathematics units align to the Ontario Math K-8 curriculum
