Developing Student Thinking and Problem Solving
Presented by Dr. Cathy Marks-Krpan
Professor Cathy Marks Krpan teaches in the Department for Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at OISE. Dr. Marks Krpan has also completed research on the development of critical thinking through graphic organizers (such as concept maps and mind maps). She is currently investigating effective teaching strategies that assist English Language Learners in mathematics classsrooms. Other topics of interest include the development of student metacognition, effective assessment strategies, critical thinking models and student inquiry mathematics and science. Cathy Marks-Krypan
Math Expressions Cover Highlights of the Workshop:
  • Strategies to engage students on how to communicate their thinking and reasoning in mathematics
  • Understanding how students math communication reveals misconceptions
  • Strategies in teaching K-8 students how to become effective in reading, writing and expressing mathematical ideas
  • Explore practical, research-based strategies that engage students in math discourse
  • Hands-on-activities for classroom use
  • Acquire strategies to help students learn how to problem solve, justify, and explain their reasoning
Student work samples and videos will be shared over the course of the day.
